The Reform UK leader and MP for Clacton has jetted out on his latest visit to Washington DC to watch the hard right Republican take power in the United States for the second time.
And in an eve-of-inauguration interview he talked up his own chances of taking over here.
Reform is neck-and-neck with Labour and the Conservatives in the polls, though at the party’s current level of support it would still only return around 100 MPs, far from what it needs to take power.
There is also the fact that there is not due to be a UK general election until 2029 – after the end of Trump’s term – and he is legally barred from serving again.
But Mr Farage told 5 News there could be an early UK election if there was an ‘economic meltdown’, insisting it was ‘not impossible’.
He added: ‘Somehow Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer have just killed any economic optimism of any kind at all. So, you could see a situation.
‘We saw it with distrust, actually. We saw what a run on the markets can do to governments. We saw it back at Suez. Actually, in the end, it was the markets that really brought Eden down more than anything else.
