Climate change talk inappropriate: premier

Published

on

With firefighters continuing the battle to save lives and homes, now is not the time to be talking about the impact of climate change, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian insists.

Fires across the state have claimed three lives and so far destroyed more than 150 homes.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the weekend dodged questions over whether the unprecedented fires were linked to climate change while Ms Berejiklian added a terse “honestly not today” when reporters raised the issue.

She maintained that line on Monday, saying it was an “inappropriate” time to talk about it.

“I thought it was inappropriate that people were trying to talk about climate change yesterday when people wanted to stay alive,” Ms Berejiklian told the Seven Network.

The premier was subsequently pressed on the issue again on ABC TV when told residents in fire-hit areas were concerned about global warming.

“There’s no doubt that there’s extreme weather conditions which have contributed to the fire conditions, conditions we’ve not seen before,” she said.

“There’s no doubt we’re seeing hotter temperatures and longer summers and more extreme weather conditions but our first and foremost priority is to keep people alive at this stage.”

Glen Innes Severn Council mayor Carol Sparks – whose home was severely damaged in a bushfire that killed two people – said the prime minister’s response when asked about climate change was “unbelievable”.

“It’s climate change, there’s no doubt about it. The whole of the country is going to be affected. We need to take a serious look at our future,” she told AAP.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack backed Mr Morrison’s stance on Monday, labelling the behaviour of those linking the fires to climate change as “disgraceful” and “disgusting”.

But Ms Sparks told ABC: “It’s not a political thing – it’s a scientific fact.”

“Of course it’s not relevant at the moment when people’s houses are burning and you’ve lost lives and you’ve lost friends and you’ve lost family,” the mayor said.

“But the overall thing is we are so dry in this country – we haven’t had rain for years in some places. We need to look at what we’re going to do about that in the future.

“To deny climate change is, to me, a very ill-informed and uneducated way of looking at things.”

Prince William attends Tusk Conservation Awards in London – but Kate misses it ‘due to the children’

Prince William attended the Tusk Conservation Awards in London alone this evening, after his wife Kate was forced to miss the event ‘due to the children’.

Kensington Palace suddenly cancelled the Duchess of Cambridge‘s attendance this afternoon, citing an undisclosed matter relating to Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one.

A spokesman said the absence was ‘due to the children’ but declined to give further details. It is not believed the issue is to do with the health of the children and Kate did join William in meeting the finalists this afternoon.

Prince William looked dashing in a royal blue suit as he arrived at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square for the awards this evening, before joining a reception at the National Portrait Gallery.

It has been a difficult week for the Royal Family; yesterday Prince Andrew announced he is stepping back from public duties ‘for the forseeable future’, over his involvement with billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

But the strain certainly didn’t show as the Duke grinned and smiled while greeting guests and nominees at the star-studded ceremony.

The annual Tusk Conservation Awards celebrate the achievements of extraordinary people, whose work protecting Africa’s natural heritage might otherwise go unnoticed outside their fields.

The Duke of Cambridge will present three awards before delivering a short speech. William has previously said of the event: ‘These awards which mean a great deal to me personally, play a huge part in our mission to preserve Africa’s precious wildlife for its people.

‘It is vital that we recognise the dedication of these unsung heroes and the bravery of rangers risking their lives, day and night, on conservation’s frontline. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude.’

Celebrities in attendance at the awards this evening included Strictly Come Dancing star Viscountess Emma Weymouth, who lives on the Longleat estate and is involved in its work with TUSK, as well as a project to help save the Northern White Rhino.

Also in attendance was singer Katherine Jenkins, broadcaster Kate Silverton, actor John Challis and his wife Carol, Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden, TV and radio personality Fearne Cotton and impressionist Rory Bremner with his wife Tessa Campbell.

The Tusk Award for Conservation is given to an emerging leader in conservation in recognition of their contribution to date.

His Royal Highness became Royal Patron of Tusk in December 2005. The Duke has actively supported the charity’s work both privately and publicly on many occasions and last visited Tusk projects in Namibia and Tanzania in 2018.

For almost thirty years, Tusk has pioneered successful conservation action in Africa by protecting wildlife, empowering communities and advancing the frontline in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.

Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Uganda

As founder and CEO of the non-profit Uganda based Conservation Through Public Health, Gladys established innovative programmes to protect mountain gorillas and other wildlife from human and livestock disease and then use information and communication technology to aid both local development and environmental education.

The Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa is a lifetime achievement award which commends outstanding dedication and contribution to conservation.

Their Royal Highnesses will then attend a reception at the National Portrait Gallery to meet the award nominees, Tusk supporters and sponsors.

Josh Duggar’s siblings post happy photos amid reports of federal investigation

Published

Another major scandal is shaking up the Duggar family thanks to the doings of oldest brother Josh — but his younger siblings are all playing it cool on social media.

Over the weekend, rumors began swirling that that there was government raid on a Duggar property, and on Wednesday Homeland Security confirmed that agents had visited the car dealership where he works in Springdale Arkansas as part of a federal investigation.

But while Josh, 31, appears to be finding himself in legal hot water once again — four years after his dual sex scandals made headlines — several of his younger siblings are presenting calm, happy fronts on Instagram while enjoying an outing at a local theme park.

Just hours after the news of her brother’s latest scandal broke, Josh’s 29-year-old sister Jana shared a light-hearted Instagram snap of her and her two younger siblings at Silver Dollar City Theme Park.

Holding a warm beverage, she smiled with younger brothers Jason 19, and Jed, 20, the latter of whom is currently running for a seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives.

‘Had a great time with friends and family today at Silver Dollar City!’ Jana wrote. ‘It was the perfect weather… almost 70 degrees!’

Jana’s friend Laura DeMaise shared a similar snap, as did Jed in his Instagram stories.

Meanwhile, several other siblings posted lighthearted photos that ignored the unfolding drama.

Jessa, 27, posted a picture of her husband Ben looking overwhelmed by all of the Amazon packages on their front step — Jessa chalked it up to ‘Christmas shopping’ — and Jill, 28, posted several photos of her two sons.

Josh’s pregnant wife Anna, 31 — who is due any day now — hasn’t posted any new photos for several days, but she has liked several of her sisters-in-law’s posts.

The family appears to be doing its best to ignore the drama unfolding with Josh.

Over the weekend, a blind item posted on the site Crazy Days and Nights Opens in New Window let to speculation that the FBI had raided the Duggar home, but an FBI agent in Arkansas told RadarOnline on Monday denied the rumor.

‘We were not involved in any kind of law enforcement action,” the agent said. ‘I can confirm we were not there.’

As it turns out, it was Homeland Security.

An HSI spokesperson to WRBL on Wednesday: ‘[I do not dispute the information that] HSI was present there pursuant to an on-going federal criminal investigation.’

That same day, TMZ learned that Homeland Security had visited the car dealership where Josh Duggar works.

The sources did not indicate what the investigation was about, however, last November, RadarOnline reported that the dealership, Champion Motorcars, LLC, was ‘illegal’ and said that Josh did not have the proper license to run the lot as a business site, despite owning it.

Josh’s younger brothers James, Josiah, and Jedidiah also work there.

Despite the reports, the Duggars’ family Instagram account posted happy family photos and videos more frequently than usual over the weekend, and on Tuesday released a statement calling the reports ‘fake news.’

‘We were shocked to see a news report today state that our home was raided by federal law enforcement agencies,’ their statement read.

‘This is not true. To the best of our knowledge, it’s also not true that any member of the family is the target of any investigation of any kind.

‘Living a life in the public’s eye has taught us that it is best not to reply to every rumor and piece of “fake news” that is circulated online. It would be a full-time job if we attempted to do so.

‘However, because of tonight’s media coverage we thought it is important to address this rumor with you. Thank you for the love and support that we can always count on in you our fans and friends [sic].’

But despite their public denials, by Wednesday afternoon, many of the listings for vehicles that had been on the dealership’s website were gone.

The family did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s inquiries about the presence of ICE agents at the dealership.

And this isn’t the first time that Josh has face legal trouble. In 2015, inTouch unearthed old police reports that detailed how Josh molested four of his younger siblings and a family friend back when he was a teenager.

In 2002, the then-teen admitted to having touched the breast area and genitals of some of the other children, including sisters Jill and Jessa, several times.

Josh did not face any legal repercussions, and only went to Christian counseling for several months as a result.

Soon after the molestation made headlines — and just a month after Josh and Anna welcomed their fourth child, Meredith — a hacker released user information for the adultery website Ashley Madison, and Josh was found among those who had used the services.

His profile included interests like ‘one-night stands and ‘experimenting with sex toys.’

Caught, Josh admitted publicly to infidelity and having a porn addiction, calling himself ‘the biggest hypocrite ever’ in a statement.

The dual sex scandals led TLC to cancel 19 Kids and Counting after ten seasons. However, the network soon brought the family back on air in a similar show called Counting On, with Josh noticeably absent.

Josh also lost his job at the conservative lobbying organization the Family Research Council (FRC) in Washington, D.C.

Josh went on to remain mostly hidden from the public eye for several years, though his wife Anna eventually started including him in photos on Instagram once again.

They went on to have another baby, and Anna is currently nearing her November due date with their sixth child.
