Edmonton tech company wins NASA iTech competition

Tevosol Transplant Technologies, an Edmonton tech company, picked up a big win Tuesday in the NASA iTech competition held in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Jayan Nagendran only had three minutes to present the Ex-Vivo Organ Support System — or EVOSS — a device developed to improve organ transplantation and possibly, one day, to place astronauts in hibernation for long-distance space travel.

“We were really privileged to have been chosen as one of the top 10 companies to present at the NASA iTech Ignite The Night event and [Tuesday] I was able to win the competition,” said Nagendran, who is co-founder of Tevosol Transplant Technologies.

Nagendran returned home with a big win for Canada on a global scale, and an even bigger accomplishment for Edmonton’s tech industry.

“It’s reassuring that a company started in Edmonton and technology that’s developed right here at home is actually being recognized at an international level and actually has an application, potentially, with deep space travel,” Nagendran said.

“This is a huge deal for the city of Edmonton because it’s putting Edmonton on the map.

“We have the most tech companies from a single city that have been reviewed and have made it to the NASA iTech top 10,” Lending Assist CEO Kim Krushell said.

The semi-final win has led to an open dialogue with NASA.

“The commitment now is that we’re likely to present at NASA’s final forum and really that means that NASA’s head office seriously reviews these top companies,” added Nagendran.

In May, Tevosol hopes to compete against 10 other companies for the top spot.

The EVOSS device is currently in its prototype phase, but commercial products will be developed later this year.

Caroline Flack found dead: Love Island presenter dies at 40

Caroline Flack has been found dead at her London flat aged 40.

The presenter is believed to have killed herself and in a statement tonight her family said: ‘We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February. We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time.’

Flack was best known for previously fronting the hugely popular ITV2 show Love Island, which has tonight been rocked by the third death of one of its former stars.

Contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon took their own lives following their appearances on the dating programme, throwing the show’s future into question.

Flack’s death comes just weeks before she was due to go on trial for assaulting partner Lewis Burton, who in December accused her of hitting him with a lamp before backtracking on these claims.

Yesterday, the model and tennis player, 27, posted a picture of him and Flack on Instagram and wrote: ‘Happy Valentine’s… Love You.’

His heartfelt snap followed his girlfriend’s last post on Thursday – a collage of selfies of her playing with beloved pet dog Ruby.

It was on Instagram where last month Flack announced she was poised to break her silence about her troubled personal life.

In January she wrote: ‘I’m going to speak today… mine and my family’s life is no longer up for entertainment or gossip,’

But a source said she wrote the post ‘without thinking’ and changed her mind, vowing to keep quiet until the time was right.

The saga surrounding Flack’s court case saw her step down from hosting Love Island – the winter series is currently on air and is being hosted by Laura Whitmore.

Yet it was understood that she would return to the ITV2 show in the summer if cleared in court for the assault allegations.

Series five finalist Molly-Mae Hague said: ‘I’m utterly shocked and heartbroken. Caroline you were such a special woman. Your huge smile will stay with me forever… Rest in peace.’

Last summer’s series participant Joe Garratt wrote: ‘Feel so sad, can’t believe what I’ve heard! Bless her heart… such an amazing woman with so much more life to live. RIP Caroline xx.’

Flack’s personal woes began when police were seen outside this Islington residence, where she lived with Burton, during the early hours of December 14 after reports emerged that a man had been attacked.

Photographs of the Flack’s blood spattered front door emerged the day before. It was reported that Burton shouted ‘I was normal till I met her’ as she was arrested by police.

Eyewitnesses have described ‘total chaos’ outside Flack’s home as police arrived to diffuse the situation with her boyfriend.

Flack was reportedly left in need of hospital treatment after accidentally cutting herself on broken glass during the incident.

Burton, who has been banned from contacting Flack, was recently forced to deny claims that the couple had split and that he had been texting another woman while she was on a recent trip to LA.

Her death has sparked calls for ITV bosses to pull the plug on Love Island as it follows the suicides of two former contestants of the reality show.

This Morning presenter Eamonn Holmes, 60, tweeted: ‘Caroline Flack …. Dear God. Shocked beyond belief. May she have found peace. #Rip Has to be repercussions for Love Island now surely?’

The 33-year-old was initially transferred back to the fever ward while her child was cared for on the neonatal isolation ward of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.

But Chinese news agency Xinhua has reported that the woman has since been cured of the deadly virus and given the green light to return home.

NHS England and NHS Improvement said on Saturday that eight people who had tested positive for Covid-19 had left hospital following two negative tests.

All 94 people in quarantine at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral have also been released, they added.

They had been kept in isolation at the hospital after returning to the UK from China – the centre of the outbreak.

More than 100 people remain at the Kents Hill Park Hotel in Milton Keynes.
