Elton John, 74, walks with the aid of a gold cane following hip surgery as he leaves The One Show with Christmas single collaborator Ed Sheeran

The pair have joined forces to recreate Love Actually’s famous doorstep scene for a new Christmas song.

And Elton John, 74, stepped out alongside Ed Sheeran, 30, as they exited The One Show studio in London, on Tuesday.

The duo, who are currently contenders for Christmas number one, appeared on the show to promote their festive track Merry Christmas and give their first ever live performance of the track.

Elton donned a glossy cherry red tracksuit with a collar and zip up front, the two piece featured a sporty blue trimmed edge.

He layered over a black blazer to spruce up his casual attire before slipping on a pair of crisp white trainers as he walked with a gold cane.

The legendary star’s outfit would not be complete without a pair of his signature glasses as he accessorised with matching red circular frames.

Ed also got the red memo as he stepped out in a knitted sweater and black trousers and he added a pair of complementary trainers.

The musicians joined presenters, Jermaine Jenas and Lauren Laverne to discuss their single and perform a World Exclusive of Merry Christmas.

Speaking on the show Ed said that they got as many Christmas references in the video as possible: ‘We have to get mistletoe in, we have to get sleighbells in – it’s a whole thing. We didn’t get mince pies in though.’

He jokingly added: ‘We’ve got one coming next year called Pull my Christmas Cracker – You’ll Get More Than a Bang.’

This comes following Elton’s recent surgery after he sustained a hip injury whilst on holiday in summer.

He previously explained how he was advised to seek surgery after physiotherapy and treatment failed to improve the situation.

Elton said in a statement: ‘At the end of my summer break I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since.

‘Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving.’

The star was forced to postpone his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in September as a result of his fall.

He was left with restricted movement in his hip joint and decided a proper recovery would mean he could continue touring at a later date.
