jameela jamil emotionally says she felt suicidal this time last year

Jameela Jamil has emotionally revealed that she felt suicidal this time last year after she was accused of having Munchausen’s syndrome by a troll.

Talking about the difficult time during The BodCon, a virtual body confidence conference, The Good Place star, 34, said that she ‘didn’t want to be here anymore’ in February 2020 after she was ‘mocked for her disability and mental health’.

Jameela said that she was ‘totally suicidal’ on her birthday last year and emotionally thought: ‘What an ugly world, I don’t want to be here anymore.’

The activist, who is now the ‘strongest and the happiest’ she has ever been, said on Sunday: ‘Just a year ago I was totally suicidal. This week is my birthday week.

‘I was totally suicidal on my birthday last year because of how much people were just mocking my disability, or like, mocking my mental health and I was like, what an ugly world, I don’t want to be here anymore.’

In February last year, Jameela was forced to defend her list of health conditions after being accused of having Munchausen’s syndrome by a troll, which causes people to pretend that they are ill when they are not.

In the past, the actress has shared personal information about being partially deaf as a child, ‘having cancer twice’, being left wheelchair ridden by one of two car accidents and having Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.

She tweeted at the time: ‘I’m tired of the bullying, the taunting over my mental and physical health.’

Speaking further at the virtual conference, Jameela said: ‘Now a year later, I’m like the strongest and the happiest and the freest I’ve ever been.’

The star added that she isn’t looking to ‘impress a bunch of strangers’ on the Internet and claimed that women are ‘scrutinised obsessively’ on social media compared to men.

In February 2020, Jameela set the record straight after an online troll accused her of having a mental disorder which causes her to lie about mental and physical illness.

The actress branded her critic ‘unhinged’ after they said she has Munchausen’s syndrome, which causes people to pretend that they are ill when they are not.

Taking to Twitter to express her outrage, Jameela penned: ‘First I’m lying about my sexuality, now I’m now being accused of munchausens?

‘By an unhinged idiot who didn’t even realise in all her “research” that my car accident injury stories are “different” because they were about TWO SEPARATE CAR ACCIDENTS 13 years apart? You can keep it.’

Jameela has Ehlers-Danlos syndromes which is a group of disorders that affect connective tissues supporting the skin, bones and blood vessels among others.

She added: ‘Ehlers Danlos Syndrome means always having people doubt your illness because you look okay. #edsawareness #itisntinyourhead #imsorrypeopleared**ks.’

The defiant star went on to call the critic’s wild claims a ‘dumb internet conspiracy theory’, before encouraging them to ‘keep coming’.

She said: ‘You just add to my relevance. I’m gonna keep helping people with eating disorders, and changing laws and global policies to protect kids and their mental health and there’s NOTHING you can do about it.’

In November, Jameela emotionally spoke about how she attempted to take her own life for the second time eight years ago, after suffering from a nervous breakdown.

The actress detailed her battle with depression and why she felt ‘everyone would be better off without me’ in an honest conversation with Jada Pinkett Smith and her daughter, Willow Smith, on Red Table Talk.

After the attempt, Jameela revealed she overhauled her life following the discovery her depression was linked to ‘repressed rage’, at which stage she decided to stop filtering what she said.

‘Everyone would be better off without me’: In November, Jameela emotionally spoke about how she attempted to take her own life for the second time eight years ago, after suffering from a nervous breakdown

She said on the Facebook talk show: ‘Eight years ago… I tried to kill myself because I had a nervous breakdown.

‘It was the second time I tried and I thought, “Well, I’m just gonna do it again if something huge doesn’t change– if everything doesn’t change.” And so I decided to try and figure out my trauma, what had taken me to this low point…’

Jameela previously revealed she was diagnosed with a rare genetic tissue disease as a child, in addition to an eating disorder and spinal damage when she was involved in a car accident at 17-years-old.

The star said she also suffered from pneumonia and was overworked, which contributed towards her breakdown and subsequent suicide attempt.

The actress reflected: ‘I wasn’t able to lie down and sleep. I was also a DJ, so I was DJ’ing all night…working myself to the bone because also, as a woman, you’re always told that you have a sprint, not marathon, and so you never say no to a job.

Important: In September, Jameela said that surviving her suicide attempt has proved to be 'the most extraordinary gift' as she looked at the things in her life she now gets to enjoy – including her romance with James Blake

‘You never say no to an opportunity. I was working myself to death. Everything was falling apart and I think I just reached my limit.

‘Everyone has a limit of how much s**t you can eat in this world and my cup of s**t runneth over and so I was like, ‘…what is the point? I’m not contributing anything to anyone. Everyone would be better off without me…”

Jameela bravely decided to take action and reached out for help.

She added: ‘[I] realised, after seeking help, I had very severe depression and that my depression was caused by repressed rage.

‘Upon realising that, I was like “Okay, I have to just completely change everything”…And so I decided to just get rid of my filter, to mixed results on the internet, and I decided to never hold anything in ever again.’
