Terrifying footage has captured the moment an SUV rolled down a busy motorway after a motorist collided with the vehicle while trying to overtake it.

The shocking incident unfolded along the M5 Motorway in Sydney

Confronting dashcam from another car showed a silver Holden Commodore zipping down the far left lane.

A white Renault SUV was travelling on the other side of the four lane road when the driver began to merge.

The Holden squeezed between two cars before merging into the same lane the SUV was moving into.

The back of the Holden clipped the front of the SUV prompting the vehicle to flip and roll several times along the motorway.

The driver of the Holden lost control of the vehicle before the car careened into the barrier.

The collision forced the vehicles travelling behind to come to a standstill.

Footage of the horrifying crash was shared to Facebook where social media users vented their shock.

‘That is scary,’ one wrote.

‘The number of accidents caused by people trying to overtake on inside lanes must be huge!’ another added.

Others slammed the driver of the Holden for endangering the safety of motorists.

‘Commodore definitely in the wrong, but this is an extreme case of drivers not keeping left unless overtaking,’ one wrote.

‘No defence for the commodore driver,’ another wrote.

‘The white car is literally overtaking, as per the correct use of the right lane,’ a third added.

One chimed in: ‘That’s just crazy driving with no regard.’

The driver of the Holden was initially travelling in a lane that merged into an exit on the highway.

NSW Road Safety rules indicate that motorists must not enter the right lane unless they are overtaking.

This rules applies for drivers travelling on freeways  and on roads where the speed limit is more than 80km/h.

Motorists are permitted to overtake on the left when they are travelling on a multi-lane road and it is safe to do so.

Drivers can also overtake from the left if the vehicle is indicating that it is turning right or making a U-turn.

Motorists can be given three demerit points and be fined up to $362 for committing an overtaking offence.
