A bizarre moment unfolded during Mexico’s rugby sevens clash against Bermuda last week after a player appeared to be struck on the head by a falling goalpost.
During the final day of the 2024 Rugby Americas North Sevens Tournament in Trinidad, Mexico would claim a 14-0 victory against Bermuda, in what was a gritty game of rubgy.
Both sides struggled to cross the try line, with the two teams going into the sheds at half-time at 0-0.
Mexico would finally break the deadlock with just over four minutes left on the clock.
It came after the South American side mounted a sensational counterattack, with one player breaking free from multiple tackles before charging his way upfield.
He offloaded to Mexico’s No 9, named as Diego Aguilar by the commentator, who strode upfield in hot pursuit by one chasing Bermuda star.

But the player, named as Diego Aguilar, careered into the goal post and appeared to dislodge the crossbar which fell onto the Mexico No 9’s head
With five metres to go, he was caught by the Bermuda defender, before slamming into the right pad on the goal post.
Aguilar rounded the post and touched the ball down for a try, but shook the post in the process, appearing to dislodge the crossbar.
The metal pole fell from its fastenings and struck Aguilar in the head as he stood up to celebrate the breakaway try, unaware of his surroundings.
The video was originally posted by Dwain McGuinness, a physiotherapist, who was left baffled by the bizarre incident.
‘The craziest injury I’ve seen in all my years doing pitch-side physio.’
Players from both sides and the referee rushed over to make sure that Aguilar was OK after the incident, with play being suspended for 10 minutes.
McGuinness would also share an update on Aguilar after the match.
He posted an image showing the Mexico player had sustained a nasty-looking cut to his head from the post, which had been stapled together.

Mexico would go on to score again in the final few minutes of the match to seal a 14-0.
Fans took to X to comment on a clip of the moment, with one writing: ‘This is the wildest sports video of the year.’
Another said: ‘This is truly the strangest injury I’ve ever seen on a pitch!’
Canada were crowned overall winners of the Men’s Tier 1 tournament beating Trinidad and Tobago 38-0 in the final.
The victory means Canada have secured a berth in the 2025 World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger series.
