Liverpool are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria as they target a swoop for the defensive midfielder this January, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Anfield and Jurgen Klopp is said to face competition from Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus for his signature, according to Calciomercato.

In a boost to Liverpool, Gladbach ‘urgently needing to generate transfer revenues’ before they can sign new players, according to German newspaper Bild.

Zakaria, a Switzerland international, is out of contract in the summer and Reds are understood to be in ‘pole position’ to secure his signature.

He broke through with Servette and went on to sign for Swiss giants Young Boys, before heading to the Bundesliga.

Since his move to Monchengladbach, the 25-year-old has featured 138 times in all competitions, and been a mainstay in the midfield.

Klopp is understood to be keen on midfield reinforcements with the Reds having previously failed to replace Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum, who left for Paris Saint-Germain last summer on a free transfer.

It is said that January is not a good time to sign new recruits, but if you look at Liverpool’s recent history they have been very astute with sporting director Michael Edwards working his magic.

Talismanic defender Virgil van Dijk was a winter window capture from Southampton in a deal worth £75million. Japan international Takumi Minamino also joined the club from Red Bull Salzburg in the winter window, too.

Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were all brought to the club in the middle of the season.

It’s thought Zakaria has a value of over £24million but the Reds will want to negotiate a cut-price deal and put the pressure on Monchengladbach, given Liverpool could sign the player for free in the summer.

Other clubs who have shown an interest in his services include Bayern, Juventus and Barcelona.

But the draw of playing under Klopp, and the fact the Reds are one of the favourites to win both the Premier League and Champions League, could help Liverpool capture their man.
