Michael Owen says Mohamed Salah has transformed from ‘average finisher’ to an ‘unbelievable goalscorer’ and claims the Liverpool forward must be handed a ‘big contract’.

Salah became the first player since Ian Rush in the 1980s to score at least 20 goals for five successive seasons after finding the back of the net during Liverpool’s Champions League clash with AC Milan on Tuesday night.

Rio Ferdinand believes Salah’s impeccable goalscoring ability is down to his ‘supreme confidence’, while Peter Crouch labelled him as ‘the best player in the Premier league at the moment’.

Salah scored his San Siro goal from the rebound of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strong right-footed effort in the 36th minute of the game.

The Egyptian watched on as Oxlade-Chamberlain and Neco Williams linked up nicely before getting himself in prime position for any second-phase opportunities.

The ball sprayed out off Mike Maignan’s gloves to Salah. The Liverpool forward demonstrated his lightening quick reactions to find the back of the net and level the score at the San Siro.

Speaking about Salah’s impressive finish during the half-time break, Owen said: ‘He makes it look so easy. It’s not an easy finish at all.

‘He takes it as it’s coming down. A yard lower the keeper saves it, a yard higher he saves it. He just makes it look easy. He was an average finisher earlier in his career and now he is just unbelievable.’

Salah began his career at Liverpool’s rivals Chelsea but after struggling for game time, headed to Fiorentina before eventually heading to Anfield in 2017.

Ferdinand agreed with Owen’s comments and insisted it was the Egyptian’s ‘supreme confidence’ that turned him into a world-class goalscorer.

Ferdinand said: ‘You now just expecting him [Salah] to score at every opportunity. Any glimpse of goal you expect him to hit the target and score. Most of the time it just supreme confidence that he’s got that just running through his veins.’

While Peter Crouch added: ‘He is relentless. It is easy for Liverpool to take their foot off the gas but they’ve not done that and that finish is so good.

‘He is the best player in the Premier league at the moment so whatever the next person is on, give him more than that.’

Owen also said that Salah’s goalscoring ability should land him a big new contract. But he identified the difficulties with deciding on his future.

The TV pundit said: ‘This is the last big contract of his career. Where can he go at the minute? Spanish football is struggling. These things are complicated and do take time.’

Nevertheless, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is optimistic that Salah will sign a new contract at the club.

When asked ahead of their Champions League fixture, Klopp said:  ‘We’re talking – and extending the contract for a player like Mo is not one where you meet for a cup of tea and find an agreement in the afternoon.

‘Mo is fine, I’m fine. What we all want is clear. Things like this take time. I think what we all want is clear things. It needs time, that is it.’
