A 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly striking a police officer with a car that was ‘driven at speed’.
A Greater Manchester Police officer was left ‘seriously injured’ Saturday night after being struck by a car in a retail park on Wilmslow Road, Cheadle.
The female officer was struck while responding to receiving reports of people acting suspiciously inside a vehicle.
As she walked the vehicle, the driver sped towards her and hit her, the force said. She was taken to hospital and received treatment for her injuries. She is ‘recovering well’ and receiving support from the force.
Chief Inspector John Picton of the Stockport district has described the incident as ‘truly shocking’ and says there is ‘absolutely no explanation as to why this incident needed to end the way it did’.
Picton added that assaults on police officers are ‘completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated’. Investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

‘This incident is truly shocking, and shows how quickly situations our frontline officers attend can escalate. There is absolutely no explanation as to why this incident needed to end the way it did,’ Picton said.
‘Our officers go to work every day to provide an outstanding service to the communities they serve, and achieve fantastic results in situations that are often challenging.
‘Assaults on our officers are completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. In this case, the officer suffered serious injuries.
‘Our investigation is continuing, and the officer is being supported by all of us at the Stockport district. She is recovering well.’
