US death row inmate cheats firing squad

Published

on

A US death-row inmate whose double-murder case was featured in the book Under the Banner of Heaven and who was nearing execution by firing squad has died of natural causes, Utah prison officials say.

Ron Lafferty, 78, died at the state prison in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper, Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kaitlin Felsted said in a statement on Monday.

His case became well known from Jon Krakauer’s 2003 book about radical offshoots of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Krakauer also wrote Into Thin Air and Into the Wild.

Lafferty was convicted in the 1984 slayings of his sister-in-law and her baby daughter, which he carried out with his brother. He claimed he received a revelation from God to kill the two because of the sister-in-law’s resistance to his fundamentalist beliefs in polygamy.

Lafferty was probably only months away from becoming the first American executed by firing squad in nearly a decade after an appeals court rejected his latest his appeal in August.

Lafferty chose the option to be killed by firing squad decades ago when he was sentenced to die. That was before Utah changed its law to use a firing squad for executions only as a backup method if lethal injection drugs were not available.

The last time a firing squad was used for an execution in the US was in 2010, when Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed in Utah for the 1984 murder of an lawyer during a failed courthouse escape.

Lafferty’s lawyers have argued that he suffered from mental illness and that his death sentence was out of line with the life sentence given to his brother Dan Lafferty.

SECOND Jeffrey Epstein victim claims she had sex with Prince Andrew

A second woman who was allegedly abused by billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein has claimed she had sex with Prince Andrew.

This comes after the Duke of York denied having slept with 17-year-old Virginia Roberts at the Belgravia home of Ghislaine Maxwell – who is accused of trafficking in young women for Epstein.

The second woman, who has not been named, has communicated with lawyers who are representing Epstein’s other alleged victims, The Mirror reports.

It is being decided whether these allegations will form part of a lawsuit against Epstein’s estate and a ‘rigorous investigation’ is underway, sources say.

There is nothing to suggest that the woman claims to have been coerced into sleeping with the Duke of York.

A palace spokeswoman said the latest allegations are ‘not something we would comment on.’

Johanna Sjoberg has claimed that Prince Andrew groped her breasts with a Spitting Image puppet of himself and said she is willing to testify under oath against the Duke of York.

It was today revealed that Prince Andrew was ‘particularly fond’ of having two women massaging him at once according to former friends, who revealed how models would sit on his lap at high society dinner parties.

An anonymous friend of Andrew, who went to parties with him after his divorce from Sarah Ferguson in 1996, revealed how ‘sexy young models’ would fling their arms around him and call him ‘Andy, Darling’.

The associate said the Prince’s ‘sexual appetite’ was on full display at one party held in the late 90s – hosted by a British art dealer and his ‘exotic foreign wife’ – where he would reportedly lie back and allow the models to sit on his lap.

When one stood up another would quickly take her place, the friend told journalist Vassi Chamberlain, for online magazine Airmail.

A stylist named Lucy revealed how the Duke particularly enjoyed receiving four-handed massages – where two women rubbed their hands over him at once.

Describing her relationship with the prince, the woman said Andrew was: ‘Respectful. Sexually, a little keen, but perfectly straightforward.

‘There was a bit of chasing around the sofa, but not in an aggressive way,’ she said.

Appearing on the BBC’s Panorama programme Virginia Roberts – now Virginia Giuffre – said that after coming to London with Epstein and his alleged madam Ghislaine Maxwell in 2001, she went dancing with the Prince at a nightclub where he was ‘raining sweat on her’.

The 35-year-old told said that after leaving Tramp nightclub, ‘in the car Ghislaine tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey.

‘And that made me sick. I didn’t expect it from royalty.

‘I didn’t expect it from someone that people look up to and admire – the royal family.’

Describing the alleged events of the evening she said: ‘There was a bath and it started there and it led into the bedroom.

‘It didn’t last very long, the whole entire procedure. It was disgusting.

‘He wasn’t mean or anything. But he got up and said thanks and walked out.

‘And I sat there in bed just felt horrified and ashamed and felt dirty.’

She went on: ‘I had just been abused by a member of the royal family.’

Earlier this week, it was reported that Prince Philip has ordered the Duke of York to step down for the sake of the monarchy following the backlash over the Duke’s friendship with Epstein.

An insider at the royal estate told The Daily Telegraph: ‘It was a tense meeting and Philip told his son that he had to take his punishment.’

Prince Charles also ‘read the riot act’ to his under-fire brother, a source claimed.

The Prince of Wales is said to have dragged his younger sibling to the royal estate for a crunch summit where he effectively retired the duke from his public duties.

Charles told his embattled brother there was ‘no way back into the family in the near future’ after the public outcry that followed his disastrous Newsnight interview.

Prince Philip also joined his sons for the light lunch, which took place shortly before the BBC interview with Andrew’s accuser Virginia Roberts aired on Monday.

Andrew has repeatedly claimed that he did not have sex with Virginia Roberts and says that he couldn’t remember meeting her.

Earlier this week a new lawsuit filed against Epstein’s estate by nine accusers claimed the paedophile’s sexual abuse of girls and young women began as early as 1985 and he targeted victims as young as 13 years old.

The accusers, known as Jane Doe I through Jane Doe IX, are among more than 20 women so far to formally seek compensation from the late financier’s $577 million estate.

Epstein died August 10, while he was awaiting trial on unrelated charges in a Manhattan prison.

Epstein’s death, at age 66, was ruled a suicide and came five weeks after his arrest on federal charges that he trafficked dozens of underage girls from at least 2002 to 2005. He had pleaded not guilty.

Lawyers for Epstein’s estate did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit, which was filed in a New York state court in Manhattan.

The nine women said Epstein’s abuses spanned more than two decades, often with help from associates, and six said they were raped.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Jordan Merson, told The New York Post that he is still working to determine the identity of all of Epstein’s “associates”.

Meanwhile, one accuser, Jane Doe II, said in court filings that Epstein sexually assaulted, abused and battered her starting around 1985, when she was 23.

Another accuser, Jane Doe I, said she was 14 when abuse began around 1990, while Jane Doe III said she was just 13 when her abuse began around 2003.

On November 14, the executors of Epstein’s estate, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, asked a judge in the US Virgin Islands to establish a voluntary restitution fund to compensate Epstein’s victims.

The fund’s administrators would include high-powered attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who has overseen payments on claims tied to the September 11 terror attacks and the 2010 BP oil spill in 2010

The latest accusers join a long line of women who have spoken out claiming to be victims of Epstein.

How Duke of York’s annual meetings with Epstein including after he was sent to jail caused Prince Andrew decades of trouble

1999

Andrew first meets Epstein, reportedly introduced through his friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell.

Andrew welcomes Epstein to the Queen’s private Scottish retreat in Aberdeenshire. Andrew later says he sees Epstein ‘infrequently’, adding ‘probably no more than only once or twice a year’.

2000

Andrew and Ms Maxwell are seen on holiday with Epstein at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Epstein and Ms Maxwell attend a party at Windsor Castle hosted by the Queen to mark Andrew’s 40th birthday, the Princess Royal’s 50th, the Queen Mother’s 100th and Princess Margaret’s 70th.

2001

Virginia Roberts claims to have had sex with Andrew ‘three times, including one orgy’, with the first encounter allegedly taking place in Ms Maxwell’s London townhouse. Ms Roberts claims to have had sex with Andrew on two more occasions, at Epstein’s New York home and at an ‘orgy’ on his private island in the Caribbean.

2008

Epstein admits prostituting minors and is sentenced to 18 months in prison.

2010

Epstein is released from jail. Andrew is photographed with the disgraced Epstein in New York’s Central Park.

Footage emerges years later, reportedly shot on December 6 2010, showing him inside Epstein’s Manhattan mansion, from where he is seen looking out from a large door of the property waving a woman goodbye after Epstein leaves to get into a chauffeur-driven car.

2011

The duke quits his role as UK trade envoy after the fallout from the Central Park photos.

2015

Buckingham Palace denies Andrew has committed any impropriety after he is named in US court documents related to Epstein. A woman, later named in reports as Ms Roberts, alleges in papers filed in Florida that she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was 17, which is under the age of consent in the state.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Andrew, in his first public engagement since he was embroiled in the allegations, responds, saying: ‘Firstly I think I must, and want, for the record, to refer to the events that have taken place in the last few weeks.

‘I just wish to reiterate, and to reaffirm, the statements that have already been made on my behalf by Buckingham Palace.’

In April the claims against Andrew are struck from US civil court records following a federal judge’s ruling.

2019

Newly released legal documents show that Johanna Sjoberg, another alleged Epstein victim, claimed Andrew touched her breast while sitting on a couch inside the US billionaire’s Manhattan apartment in 2001.

Buckingham Palace said the allegations are ‘categorically untrue’.

Epstein is found dead in his jail cell on August 10, having killed himself after being charged with sex trafficking.

Later that month a pilot on Epstein’s private jet claims Andrew was a passenger on past flights with the financier and Ms Roberts.

The Sun newspaper reported that David Rodgers said in a testimony released in August that Epstein, Andrew and the-then 17-year-old travelled to the US Virgin Islands on April 11 2001.

Buckingham Palace describes the evidence statement as having ‘a number of inconsistencies’ and said that Andrew was on a different continent in some cases.

Following Epstein’s death, a statement from the palace says that Andrew is ‘appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes’.

Breaking his silence on the issue for the first time since 2015, Andrew then releases a statement on August 24 saying: ‘At no stage during the limited time I spent with him (Epstein) did I see, witness or suspect any behaviour of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction.’

NSW Bushfires: 7 Sports Editor Jim Wilson reveals desperate fight to save his family home

Published

on

By

The past few weeks have seen nature’s fury unleash around the state and country.

Catastrophic conditions, lives lost, livelihoods impacted and our emergency personnel who’ve been so courageous in the most trying conditions.

Watch the video above.

The bushfire crisis has been frightening up and down the east coast and beyond.

The extent of the fires and the sheer magnitude of the land destroyed has been extraordinary.

It’s been eerie and confronting to watch and we’ve had a taste of what it feels like to be in the firing line.

At least we’ve had warnings and constant updates on the dangers heading our way and time to prepare.

Others haven’t been so lucky with fires tearing through townships and communities over the past month with little or no notice.

No time to get out let alone pack up your valuables and some of the stories have brought us to tears.

Lives changed forever and hard-working people on their knees.

We know and have always said there are so many worse off than us and that remains our overriding emotion.

The past few weeks have tested us and we feared we’d lose our happy place in the Lower Hunter Valley.

The cars remain packed with our valuables – photos, quirky items that mean so much to both of us.

Exhausted, those working to save the property take a brief break.

The rugs knitted by my wife Chris’s mum and nan, my granddad’s cross country athletics award are also packed but that’s it.

It’s amazing when something like this happens what items really matter to you and I have to say not a lot!

On Thursday, we made the decision we needed to protect our property.

We had invested in fire trailers, roof sprinklers on the house and shed, fire hoses, pumps, generators and fire protective gear ( helmets, gloves, goggles etc).

More on 7NEWS.com.au

We knew we stood no chance if the mega-fire, that’s developed in the Hunter over the past 48 hours hit us, but thought we could fight the ember attacks and spot fires.

Our work and bosses were so supportive to give us the time off to try and protect the place that means so much to us.

Then there are our neighbours who’ve shown what community spirit is all about.

Like us, Chris who’s just up the dirt road is relatively new to our country hood and has provided constant support and updates.

Mick the truck driver, who’s been here for over 20 years, has given us advice over a bitterly cold frothie.

He also looks after the shared dirt road on his old Massey Ferguson so emergency vehicles have access when it hits the fan.

Then there’s Brian and Barb up the mountain who’ve been here the best part of four decades after they gave away city life.

They’re in their 70’s and we love their company.

Brian remains adamant he ain’t going anywhere and will defend their home.

To our handyman/ mechanic guru Arthur who’s taught us so much.

Firefighters hose down during a bushfire.
Fire tears through a fence during a bushfire in Weromb.

He dropped his work duties this week to fight the fires as a long time RFS volunteer.

Two nights ago, Arthur rang to tell us the fire he was fighting with his Wollombi crew was threatening his own home.

But he didn’t blink an eyelid and was purely focussed on saving lives and other properties.

That right there is a true community hero and made me so proud to be Australian and to call Arthur a mate.

And his wife Milly is a saint for letting Arthur join the amazing men and women in our emergency personnel as she looked after the family.

Right now the smoke remains heavy and the fires continue to burn around us.

We remain on alert and that won’t change for the next few days and the scary thing is Summer has just begun.

We’re pretty new to all this although Chris has covered countless bushfires through her media roles.

I had no clue so this has been a real eye-opener.

It's been eerie scenes in NSW of late.

Nature at its worst and I can’t thank our neighbours for caring and offering support – true mateship.

And to the police, ambos, fire crews led by the RFS here, a huge thank you for your tireless work in protecting us.

You’re all true heroes who’ve worked round the clock in hostile and unpredictable conditions.

We are by no means out of the woods yet and it’s going to be a tense few days and summer ahead.

Hopefully the bird nerds are our farm and our happy place stays intact but we also know lives come first.

Our bushfire survival plan is now more important than ever as is listening to the experts.

To those impacted by the fires, our thoughts and to those continuing to fight the good fight THANKYOU !
